Training Within Industry (TWI) for Supervisor and Worker Development.

Training Within Industry (TWI) started in 1940 to help industry meet the high demands on manufacturing brought on by the 2nd world war.  Still relevant and practical today, TWI is a proven hands-on training method to teach supervisors, team leaders and workers to build skills and better supervise processes.  It develops frontline workers to help achieve sustainable, consistent results in the workplace.  Principles include problem solving skills, standard work production, continuous improvement and operational excellence.  TWI can also be an important part of your Lean manufacturing initiatives.  When embraced as a part or your commitment to manufacturing excellence, TWI will encourage employee engagement and job satisfaction, aid in conflict resolution and increase team motivation and cooperation.

TWI Programs & Training.

Missouri Enterprise’s Project Managers can assess your supervisor training needs and help you implement any or all of the following TWI training programs.  Training schedules are customized to work around and within your production schedules.  Contact your local Missouri Enterprise Area Business Manager to learn more about these TWI training programs.

  • TWI Job Relations. Teach supervisors how to build positive employee relations, increase cooperation and motivation and effectively resolve conflicts.  The course emphasizes treating people as individuals and teaches supervisors how to handle problems and take appropriate corrective actions.  The TWI Job Relations training program includes discussion of real-world problems that everyone can easily relate to and how supervisors can incorporate the TWI “4-Step Method” to handle such problems more effectively.
  • TWI Job Instruction. This course teaches supervisors how to quickly train employees to do a job correctly, safely and conscientiously.  The objective is to help supervisors develop a well-trained workforce that produces less scrap, rework and rejects, with fewer accidents.  Emphasis is given to helping the employee to learn, giving proper demonstrations of tasks while identifying important steps and key points of the job, then coaching and following up on trainee progress.
  • TWI Job Methods. The aim of TWI Job Methods training is to help produce greater quantities of quality products in less time, making best use of the manpower, machines and materials available.  Supervisors are taught how to break down jobs into their constituent operations and question details (Why? What? Where? When? Who? How?), then develop new and better methods by eliminating, combining, rearranging or simplifying operational elements.
  • TWI Job Safety. The objective of the Job Safety TWI module is to prevent accidents form happening rather than dealing with the aftermath.  Supervisors are taught to see safety as an inherent part and a critical factor in everything they do as a supervisor.  The course focuses on how accidents are caused, and how to break the chain of causes leading to injury.
